The BMW i3 is a 100% battery powered vehicle with an EPA-rated range of 114 miles1.
The BMW i3 with Range Extender (also known as Rex) has a gas-powered, two-cylinder engine to generate electricity to maintain the charge of the lithium-ion battery at an approximate 5% level. The 2017 BMW i3 Rex has an EPA-rated range of 180 miles1. For more information on the BMW i3 with Range Extender visit here.
How long does it take to fully charge the BMW i3?
Via a level 2 charging station, the battery is fully charged in approximately 4.5 hours when charging
at 240 volts, 30 amps.
You can also use the Occasional Use Cable (OUC), provided with each BMW i vehicle, to top off your battery by plugging into any 120-volt dedicated outlet. Using the OUC, the BMW i3 reaches a full charge in around 24 hours2.
If using Public DC Chargers (50kW, 0-80%), the battery will fully charge in 30-35 minutes.

Will there be issues with the BMW i3 in the winter/summer (extreme temperatures)?
The BMW i3 has an intelligent heating and cooling system of the battery ensures that its energy–and thus, the vehicle’s range–is less affected by temperature fluctuations than it normally is with batteries of this type. As such, it makes a significant contribution to both the performance and service life of the cells. An 8-year limited warranty or 100,000 miles is given for the high-voltage battery. Actual results will vary for many reasons, including driving conditions and how you drive and maintain your vehicle.
How long does ambient air temperatures affect EV range?
The relatively shorter range of an EV versus a conventional vehicle makes any reduction in range more apparent.
However, the BMW i3 is engineered with special features that minimize the impact of extreme temperatures.
These features include preconditioning, a battery thermal management system, and user selectable driving modes such
as EcoPro and EcoPro+. The aforementioned driving modes alter the operation of the accelerator pedal, reduce the
maximum vehicle speed, and put energy consumers such as heating and air conditioning into an energy saving mode.
Using EcoPro+ in combination with preconditioning (while plugged in) will provide the greatest efficiency and range. Using EcoPro with preconditioning (while plugged in) offers a good balance between comfort and range. We recommend making use of these features to help minimize the impact of weather on your vehicles range.
Are my brake lights enabled when using regenerative braking in my BMW i3?
Yes, the brake light will be enabled when using regenerative braking.
