This looks like a dead horse, with no posts for some time. I am new to the forum but have had my i8 for 2+years. I do notice some reduction in electric only range due to temperature and possibly other factors. In a suburban environment, I can get typically more than 15 miles and often in the 16 to 18 range. Driving normally, whatever that is :-) I don't drive the car in "winter" so 40 is is probably the lower end of my range. I have not complained about the range.
One thing is interesting, measuring mpg in electric only mode, using the displayed 4 miles per kwh here in WI means about 92 mpg if I was spending the $ on gas, here averaging about $3/gal. However it takes more than that calculated amount of juice to go 4 miles. I measure the kwh going in and if it takes 9 kwh to fully charge and then drive 16 miles would be mpg of about 41 based on the alternative of spending the same $1.30 on gas at $3 per gallon. So the window sticker was pretty crazy, even if when I got the car gas was more like $4+ per gallon...
