Since my last post regards to DTM msg. in September 09, 2017. I again got at least 5 more DTM msg. 3 times out of 5 times I was in the middle of the road, rolling toward the traffic lights at 2-4 mph and my i3 just stopped and the motor locks up and displayed DTM msg. THIS REALLY BLOWS, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC AND ALL! How embarrassing! People stared, honks (for those that didn’t noticed the hazard lights were on!) and laughed. I just had to look away. I left my car in the middle of the road (all three times) and stand on the sidewalk. Two out of three was with my family. I could care less if I was by myself, but with my family and the car die in traffic? COME ON MAN! So, I noticed twice when using the EVgo DCFC the charging was interrupted for some reason and my car stopped charging from about 6% - 38% charged. The Car starts and goes, but die in the middle of the road a mile or two later (at the traffic lights) with DTM msg displayed. Whenever I get the DTM msg, I can not put the car into Drive, Reverse and or Neutral. Basically, the car cannot be move. I read thru this forum and it confused me whether people were able to drive when DTM msg displayed (I am not talking about just the engine check light, that I know I can still drive the car)? Pls be thorough with that particular part. Because my car is in-operable when DTM msg display. I want to use DCFC at EVgo because BMW gives 2 years of free charging at EVgo’s DCFC stations. Looks like I need to just stop doing that. WHAT A SHAME! I truly regret buying this i3. I should have gotten the 320d with 45 mpg hwy and 35+ mpg city. Or perhaps the cheap Chevy Bolt. UGH!!! BMW i3 SUCKS!!!!
I encountered the same "DTM" issue yesterday in the freeway. I cannot restart the car after I pull over in the curbside of the free way but it can be restart again after around 10-15 min with the engine light is on.
The most concern is the safety issue it may cause. I have send my car to dealer this morning for the inspection.
Late follow up for your guys. Since my last post of DTM msg. was in Oct. 21, 2017. Now is Dec. 21, 2017. My car still getting DTM msg at least 5-7 times and die in the middle of the road 4 times. I called BMW road side assists and had it towed to the dealer 3 times, 1 time I got it to starts and drove to the dealer 7 miles away. POS! The 10-15 min. don’t always work now. A couple of times it die and didn’t starts for 4-5 hrs later. Anyhow, The dealer had my car for two wks( needs a new Electric motor), just finished up today and I’m going to pick it up tomorrow. The car only has 18,500 miles stilll under warranty(thank god!) AND it needs a new electric motor! BMW don’t make cars like they used to. HORRIBLE i3 experience! I am now looking at Toyota Prius Prime with 25 miles on battery @87mph. I’m sure I can get ez 30 miles on battery at 70-75 mph. Gas is 45-50 mpg. After all I am getting 95-103 mpe on my est 80 mpe i3. BMW is all Shows and no GoI never realized how suck it is to have car trouble. Thanks BMW!
Continue with my DTM msg. My i3 is a goner, the DTM msg will not go away. Every time I drive the car, I have this fear that it will die out and I have to call BMW towing service. Worst experience with any cars ever. I’ve never had cars die on me in my 25 yrs driving. Of course I always buy Lexus, Toyota and or Honda, 1 Benz 2005 c280 lasted 185,000 miles b4 my little sister recked. 1 Chevy Suburban 185,000 miles (changed 1 alternator, no issues period). Here is my i3 issue and I encourage everyone who own a REX version should do this. I noticed when ever my car low on juice and the REX engine kicks in(i only drive about 60-65 MPH on the highway when ever REX is on), from work to home is about 20 miles. So I had the REX engine on for about 20 miles and next stop is to the DCFC charge station, I charged. It didn’t take long for the DTM msg to hit up my car; In about 3-5 days later, with more DCFC and 240v charging thru out, since the REX last turned on. BOOM I get DTM msg(automatically CEL on too) and my car will not go into D and or R. That’s when I called BMW road side assist. AND this happened every time the REX engine was being used. I know non of REX owners want to run on their REX, but this is the only way you can test and track down the DTM issue/s. If your i3 is still under warranty, do it b4 it is too late. My last DTM msg was DEC. 2017(car die in the middle of the road of course), and BMW replaced the electric motor and EME(hi-voltage charging electrical cable or something like that). I know that is an arm and a leg right there. My dealer is definitely clueless about fixing the DTM msg issue/s. Take my advice get to know your REX and Good Luck. For the last 3 DTM msg, my car will not shift to D or R until 3+ hrs later. So today DTM msg break down, I attempted to start my i3(3+ hrs later) while waiting for my ride home at the dealer after the tow guy left. DTM msg gone, only CEL on. I turn off the car and open the charger flap, and put my remote next to the Start/Stop button and attempt to starts the car again. This time the CEL gone too. Car displayed charge flap open(read this trick on some forum I don’t remember) . Again the 10-15 min. Doesn’t seem to work for my i3 anymore. So my i3 was towed to BMW dealer(Sunday) I had to dropped the key in the slot for Monday opens. I file BBB autoline to have my i3 lemon. Only been 15 days. Going to be a long process. I’m afraid one day Im going to get rear ended because of this DTM issues. I don’t take my family in this i3 anymore, what a shame! To Be Continue….
I actually just experienced this horrible issue last night! Thanks god I was on local and drive slowly coz the speed limit on that street is 25. My car was fully charged at work place, and I was driving home. Suddenly the car stopped with that msg ""Drive Train Malfunction" code" And thank GOD, the person who drove behind me stopped as well. I poked the start button twice, the car started again! Hopefully it will be fixed. I just realized I should contact the service center today.
I experienced this today on freeway driving at 80miles/hour. My car is 2015 REX model. I drove slightly over two years, 30000 miles.
First, I ran out of battery, 4 miles left on battery. The car then turned to use gas. Then the Drive Training warning came up, it also says 'electric drive only', 'you may continue to drive'. It's on freeway, and I was driving at 80 miles/hour. So it's a bit hard to look at the error msg closely and bit hard to digest what it means. Since it says 'you may continue driving', so I continued. Then the car slowed down considerably. I changed four lanes from the left most to the right most in morning traffic, and then it really really slowed down, I was able to reach the next exit and the car slowly glided through the exit and stopped completely. From then on, it wouldn't move a bit. Horrible horrible experience on freeway!!! It's then towed to BWM dealer.
