Has anybody experienced "Drivetrain malfunction" error? I received this error message a few times then the car completely shut down (scary as hell) while driving on the highway? My i8 has been at the dealer more than 6 weeks. Thanks.
It happened to me twice! First time when I'm trying to U-Turn on the road my i8 engine turn off suddenly, almost got crash by a truck behind. Took about one minute to be able to turn on the engine.
Second time it happen in the middle of the intersection when I'm doing a right turn. I sent my car to the dealer and they reset the car twice but it seems they don't even know what cause the problem.
After both incidents it creeps me out every time I need to drive my i8. I think BMW should do something about this substantial defects and provide customers with refund or a replacement since this is a serious issue and is very dangerous.
This exact situation happened to me 3 times over the last 3 months all while driving at high speeds. I called BMW Corporate last night to inform them of this issue and they were "shocked" and said they never heard of this before, which is exactly what the dealership told me the two times i brought it in for service. Now i find this forum and see other people are experiencing the same issue...i'm furious! The car is sitting in my driveway and i refuse to drive it because it is a death trap. I am waiting for a supervisor to call me back to let me know what they intend to do with the car because i absolutely will not get in the car again. There should absolutely be a recall on this car before someone gets killed.
Hi guys, I have longed for an i8 for some years now and have finally saved up! All ready to pick up a late 2016 model and have been told by dealership that it is in with master technician because of this drivetrain issue needing a new part and new wiring at 5,000 miles. Has anyone had their i8 fixed from this issue and did this resolve it or does it keep coming back? I would be very grateful of any answers on this as i am pretty nervous having read these posts. Rung BMW UK and they said they've never heard of this issue!
I bought a brand new BMWi8 in 2015 June and a couple of months ago I had the final warranty check ups and inspection of the vehicle. In the last couple of weeks on my dashboard a message regarding a drivetrain malfunction “drivetrain range severely restricted” keeps appearing. So far I cannot detect any technical malfunctions with the performance or the vehicle whilst driving however it is annoying and very uncomfortable to drive the car knowing there is an existing fault.
Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how did you fix it? Did BMW own up to this malfunction and rectify? Any help or advice regarding this malfunction? Thank you
