We like our 2014 i3 but we also thought there would be an i5 by now. Has BMW decided to go back to ICE cars? Local dealer doesn't even stock hybrids, except the i8 "Roadster" at $166K.
Short answer is YES, BMW has backtracked on EVs in favor of hybrids (PHEV) that have token EV range of 10-20 miles. There will be another BMW EV some time in 2021+ time frame, sort of a Jag i-Pace style offering, but years too late...
Draw your own conclusions.

2014 i3 BEV owner here myself. Was hoping to transition to an i5 myself after a few years. But now just looking forward to the Model Y.
PHEV is a dying concept, it was a transitional creature during the evolution from ICE to EV. Ever wonder why paleontologists find so few transitional fossils? Because the need for them are very short-lived. Even the Volt is dying. This is why Tesla is just 4000 cars away from beating BMW on monthly sales.
